Joe Simpson Pleads Not Guilty To DUI

Joe Simpson says he is not guilty of driving under the influence. The father of Ashlee and Jessica Simpson entered his plea to two counts of DUI in court Thursday.

Joe was arrested on August 4 in Sherman, Oaks, Calif.

After he was pulled over and officers believed he was intoxicated, he was detained overnight at Valley jail in Van Nuys before being released on $5,000 bail.

Joe and Jessica Simpson

The grandfather of Maxwell Drew Johnson had his lawyer enter his not guilty plea on his behalf Thursday, and a pretrial hearing has been set for October 11.

The former minister could face a maximum penalty of six months in jail, three years of probation and a $1,000 fine if convicted, though that's unlikely.

Nevertheless, "Joe's arrest absolutely shocked his family," a family source said. "Anytime he's in the news, it directly reflects upon Jessica and Ashlee."

ABC News sued for defamation over 'pink slime' reports

(Reuters) - ABC News was hit with a $1.2 billion defamation lawsuit on Thursday by a South Dakota meat processor that accused it of misleading viewers into believing that a product that critics have dubbed "pink slime" was unsafe.

Beef Products Inc sued over ABC reports aired in March and April about the company and its "lean finely textured beef."

In court papers, the company said ABC falsely told viewers that the beef product was not safe, not healthy, and not even meat, and that the reports have cost it much of its business and hundreds of millions of dollars in profit.

"The lawsuit is without merit," Jeffrey Schneider, senior vice president of ABC News, a unit of Walt Disney Co, said in a statement. "We will contest it vigorously."

Six individuals were also sued, including ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer, and the reporters Jim Avila and David Kerley.

Another defendant is Gerald Zirnstein, a former U.S. Department of Agriculture microbiologist credited with coining the term "pink slime," and who appeared in ABC's reports. He could not be immediately reached for comment.

ABC conducted a "sustained and vicious disinformation campaign," Beef Products' lawyer Dan Webb, chairman of Winston & Strawn and a former U.S. attorney in Chicago, said at a press briefing.

"To call a food product slime is the most pejorative term that could be imagined," he said. "ABC's constant repetition of it, night after night after night, had a huge impact on the consuming public."

Beef Products accused ABC News of acting with actual malice in producing its reports, a high legal standard to meet.

"These kinds of cases are hard to win, because courts have given media many protections in reporting on matters of public concern," said Bruce Rosen, a partner and media law specialist at McCusker, Anselmi, Rosen & Carvelli in Florham Park, New Jersey.

"Constitutionally, the plaintiff has to show ABC knew what it was broadcasting was false, or had very strong reasons to know, and ignored them," he said. "It's a very hard standard to overcome. Dan Webb will have his hands full."

OPRAH WINFREY

Beef Products is the largest U.S. producer of lean finely textured beef, a filler made from fatty trimmings that are sprayed with ammonia to kill bacteria.

The Department of Agriculture approved use of the product in ground beef in 1993, and affirmed its safety in March.

But that has failed to quiet critics, which have included food safety activists as well as animal rights organizations.

Large customers have also taken note, with companies such as McDonald's Corp, Yum Brands Inc's Taco Bell and supermarket chain Safeway Inc having halted their purchases of the product.

Other courts have addressed similar claims in the past.

In 2000, a federal appeals court rejected defamation claims by Texas cattle ranchers against talk show host Oprah Winfrey over a "dangerous food" episode of her eponymous show, where she was accused of falsely depicting U.S. beef as unsafe in the wake of a British panic over "mad cow" disease.

PRODUCT DISPARAGEMENT ALLEGED

Beef Products filed its 263-page complaint in Union County Circuit Court in South Dakota. It said ABC included nearly 200 false, defamatory and disparaging statements in on-air and online reports, and in social media postings.

Based in Dakota Dunes, just west of Sioux City South Dakota, Beef Products also accused ABC of interfering with its business dealings with grocery store chains and ground beef processors.

It said ABC's "campaign" against it actually began in April 2011, when the network broadcast a show featuring British chef Jamie Oliver that included false statements about the type of beef trimmings it used.

Beef Products said the media furor forced it shut three of its four plants and eliminate more than 700 jobs, roughly half its workforce, and cost more than $20 million of revenue each month.

It also said weekly sales of the beef filler have fallen to less than 2 million pounds per week from nearly 5 million.

Beef Products said it is seeking $400 million of compensatory damages representing lost profit, which could be tripled under South Dakota's Agricultural Food Products Disparagement Act, plus punitive damages.

Zirnstein had used the term "pink slime" in a 2002 email to coworkers after touring a Beef Products plant. His email was later released to The New York Times.

The case is Beef Products Inc et al v. American Broadcasting Cos et al, Circuit Court of South Dakota, Union County, No. 12-292.

Gaz-System to Increase Gas Supplies in Radom ... - LNG World News

Gaz-System Plans to Increase Gas Supplies in Radom Region

The Gas Transmission Operator GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. and the Mazowiecka Sp??ka Gazownictwa Sp. z o.o. have signed a cooperation agreement concerning making transmission of greater quantities of gas available to Radom and the surroundings.

The purpose of the agreement signed by the Companies on 4 September 2012 is increasing gas supplies to customers in the Radom region. The Companies have planned actions that are both intervening and long-term. The first stage will include actions that are expedient in nature. In the direct vicinity of the S?kocin gas station, GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. will build a gas compressing facility in the S?kocin ? Lubienia distribution gas pipeline towards the Radom direction. This will enable the gas pressure to be increased in this gas pipeline.

The Companies will also undertake coordinated investments that in the future, long-term perspective will enable gas to be supplied to the Radom region from the eastern direction.

GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. will build a high-pressure gas pipeline to Kozienice, whereas the Mazowiecka Sp??ka Gazownictwa will develop the distribution system, enabling the direction of supply to be changed for the Radom region from the S?kocin direction to supplies from the Kozienice direction.

The performance of these investments will completely satisfy the demands of this region in terms of the demand for natural gas and will enable its further development based on gas fuel.

Britain?apologizes over 1989 soccer disaster

Christopher Furlong / Getty Images

Children lay floral tributes at a memorial to the victims of the 1989 Hillsborough soccer disaster at Anfield stadium after the publication of the independent report into the incident on Sept. 12, 2012.

By ITV News and Reuters

LONDON ? Britain?s government apologized Wednesday after an independent report said there had been failures and cover-ups in the wake of the 1989 Hillsborough soccer disaster in which 96 spectators died after a crowd crush.

There were gasps from lawmakers as Prime Minister David Cameron announced the findings of the report, which marked the culmination of a 23-year campaign the families of victims of Britain's worst sporting disaster.

"On behalf of the government, and indeed our country, I am profoundly sorry,? Cameron said, adding: "It was wrong that the families have had to wait for so long - and fight so hard - just to get to the truth."

The victims died in an overcrowded fenced-in enclosure at the Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield, northern England, minutes prior to the start of a match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

It was a tragedy that changed the face of soccer in Britain and ushered in a new era of modern, all-seated stadiums. Britain was shocked by harrowing images of young fans crushed against metal fences, bodies lying on the pitch and spectators using wooden placards as makeshift stretchers on a warm spring afternoon.

Read full coverage at ITV News

The report concluded police had sought to blame the Liverpool fans, portraying them as aggressive, drunk and ticketless and bent on packing into the already crowded stadium.

"The tragedy should never have happened," the report's authors said in a statement. "There were clear operational failures in response to the disaster and in its aftermath there were strenuous attempts to deflect the blame onto the fans."

Senior police edited their officers' witness statements from the day to paint them in a less damaging light, the report said. Their emergency response was flawed and badly organized.

While inquiries found hooliganism played no part in the disaster, the police crowd management plan was preoccupied with preventing disorder, the report said.

Liverpool fans had been tainted by the Heysel stadium disaster in Belgium in 1985. Fighting inside that stadium led to Juventus fans being crushed against a wall that collapsed. Six Liverpool fans and 33 supporters of the Italian team died.

The real danger at Hillsborough lay in the emergency services' poor planning and a stadium that failed to meet minimum safety standards, the report said. Its capacity was overstated and previous crushes at Hillsborough had been ignored.

The disaster is still an open wound in Liverpool, the port city of nearly half a million people that is passionate about soccer and has fielded players such as Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard.

All the victims during the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, held at the neutral ground of Sheffield Wednesday, were Liverpool supporters.

Trevor Hicks, of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, said: "We feel vindicated... We have had all sorts of accusations thrown at us over the 23 years." He added: "If today says one thing to the world, we are vindicated in our search for the truth."

In the aftermath of the disaster, a government spokesman incensed families by blaming the disaster on drunken fans. The report found no reason for the coroner's decision to take blood alcohol samples from all of the victims, including children. "The pattern of alcohol consumption among those who died was unremarkable," the report said. "The weight placed on alcohol levels was... inappropriate and misleading."

The disaster was also one of the low points for Rupert Murdoch's British newspaper group, currently reeling from a phone hacking scandal that has led to criminal charges against former senior executives and reporters. Its tabloid title, The Sun, accused Liverpool fans of stealing from the dying, urinating on policemen and beating up an officer who was attempting to resuscitate a victim. The newspaper's executives have since apologized for the story, which was found to be untrue. The editor at the time, Kelvin MacKenzie, apologized again on Wednesday - although his words were unlikely to end a long-standing boycott of the newspaper by consumers in Liverpool.

The Hillsborough Independent Panel, headed by the Bishop of Liverpool Rt. Rev. James Jones, was set up in 2010 to oversee the release of thousands of previously unseen documents related to the incident.?

Zimbabwe: Swiss tourist fined for insulting Mugabe

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) ? Zimbabwean court officials say a Swiss tourist has been fined $200 for insulting President Robert Mugabe.

Thomas Fischer from Altnau, Switzerland was convicted by a court in northwestern Zimbabwe for criticizing Mugabe in an argument with border officials at the lake resort town of Kariba.

Prosecutors alleged that during a delay in border formalities, Fischer said Mugabe "knew how to screw people, especially foreigners."

Insulting Mugabe is an offence under sweeping security laws and prosecutions are common. Earlier this year, a Zimbabwean salesman spent two months in jail after being found with satirical cartoons depicting a naked, skeletal Mugabe on his mobile phone. A Zimbabwean carpenter was arrested in February after he questioned whether Mugabe still had the strength to blow up balloons at his 88th birthday.

Kids with food allergies can fall through the cracks

ScienceDaily (Sep. 13, 2012) ? More can be done to properly manage the care of American children with food allergies, especially when it comes to diagnostic testing and recognizing non-visual symptoms of severe allergic reactions, according to a new Northwestern Medicine study.

"Every child with a food allergy should be diagnosed by a physician, have access to life-saving medication such as an epinephrine autoinjector and receive confirmation of the disease through diagnostic testing," said lead author Ruchi Gupta, M.D., an associate professor of pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a physician at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. "Not all children are receiving this kind of care."

The study was published online in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the official publication of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.

Data in this study is from a randomized online survey of U.S. households with children with symptoms consistent with a mild-to-severe food allergy. It's the first paper of its kind to offer insight on how pediatric food allergies are typically diagnosed and what can be done to streamline the management of the disease and keep affected children safe.

Here are key findings from the study:

  • 70 percent report receiving a physician's diagnosis for their child's food allergy
  • Lower income and minority households were more likely to have a child with an undiagnosed food allergy.
  • Of the physician-diagnosed children, 32 percent did not receive diagnostic testing -- such as a blood, skin or oral food challenge test.
  • A skin test was the most popular diagnostic test with 46 percent. A blood test was second with 39 percent.
  • Only 1 in 5 of reported that their child received an oral food challenge test -- the gold standard of food allergy diagnoses.

"An oral food challenge might be scary for parents because their child is being fed the allergenic food," Gupta said. "Some physicians think the risks outweigh the benefits, but it is the best tool we have to diagnose a food allergy."

Here are key findings on the kind of reactions children had to the top nine food allergies, which are: egg, finfish, milk, peanut, sesame, shellfish, soy, tree nut and wheat:

  • Cutaneous symptoms, such as hives, puffy eyes or lips, and eczema occurred in 80 percent of food-induced anaphylactic reactions.
  • During severe, life-threatening reactions, hives only occurred in 40 percent of the cases and puffy eyes or lips in 34 percent of the cases.

"Not all food allergy reactions start with swelling or a rash," Gupta said. "If you suspect your child has eaten something they're allergic to and you don't see a visible sign of a reaction, you need to think about what might be going on internally."

Here are some questions to ask a child after a suspected accidental ingestion of an allergenic food:

  • Does your throat feel tight?
  • Are you having trouble breathing?
  • Do you feel dizzy or faint?
  • Does your stomach hurt?

"This study shows why it's vital that children receive an accurate diagnosis, and that parents and other caregivers know the signs of a severe reaction and are equipped to respond immediately," said Mary Jane Marchisotto, executive director of the Food Allergy Initiative (FAI), which provided financial support for the study. "We urge families to visit www.faiusa.org, where they will find the information and tools they need to understand and cope with food allergies."

A nonprofit founded in 1998 by concerned parents and grandparents, FAI is the world's largest private funder of food allergy research.

Video: A son remembers his hero father

>>> welcome back. an agreement has been reached to complete the september 11th museum in ground zero . it was intended to open this month, but a dispute over funding halted construction last year. at the memorial family members of those who died gathered as a reminder out of tragedy certainly emerges tales and stoers of heroism and resilience. ronald fazio was working at the south tower . he helled co-workers hold the doors as they left the pblg. his son used his father's story as inspiration founding the organization hold the door for others which help them get through the adversity of loss. just reading the name of the organization, hold the door for others just gives you chills, but it also enables you to smile. you know your father was doing that that day 11 years ago.

>> yeah. we're one of those families that are really fortunate that we know my dad's story. when you talk about what he did that day and leading others, just it's a great way that inspires people to live their lives that way.

>> how can you learn what he did that day?

>> a lot of his co-workers. he was very close with the people he worked with. they all wanted to find him, and they called the house and said, where's your dad? he was holding the door. we can't find him. we didn't find him, but he found an inspiration.

>> absolutely. this pain never goes away. when people says waiting for the door to close or these analogies, looking for closure, you never get closure when you lose someone you love. how did you find a way to start this organization?

>> you know, he really didn't give us a choice. a story like that, you know, people are going to want to talk about it and it just -- the second that we knew we lost him, which was about three weeks out because i'm stubborn and didn't want to give up looking for him and neither did our family. we wanted to have something that made his legacy loud, and i think we've all done that together.

>> absolutely. what was your thought when you saw the memorial and how far it's come. i've lived in new york for five years. you witnessed that time where everyone thought this would be a hole forever. there will be nothing here and we'll be caught up in rangling over dollars and now you see the tower and fountain and we saw an image of a kid kiss the name of a loved one insubscricribed on the wall.

>> it 's wonderful . it creates memories that create movements. we talk about how in the first few years you walk down in the pit and you felt it in the pit of your stomach. now you look up at this beautiful towers and see more doors being built.

>> we were there last year live from the site. ron allen , my colleague was there today. he talked about the intimate see of today's remembrance. it's a different feel. you know it is about the families.

>> it is. that's one thing that new york and america has gotten right today, is it's about connecting with one another that raw emotion of that day, of being relived today. you know, whenever there's a moment of silence for those bells, everyone stops, has a memory, and then they move forward and that's great respect for remembering our loved ones .

>> absolutely. you've shed great respect on the wonderful life your father lived and obviously the great impression he made on you and his family members. you're a lucky son.

'Spin' in media reports of scientific articles

ScienceDaily (Sep. 11, 2012) ? Press releases and news stories reporting the results of randomized controlled trials often contain "spin" -- specific reporting strategies (intentional or unintentional) emphasizing the beneficial effect of the experimental treatment -- but such "spin" frequently comes from the abstract (summary) of the actual study published in a scientific journal, rather than being related to misinterpretation by the media, according to French researchers writing in this week's PLoS Medicine.

"Spinning" the reporting of clinical trials could give physicians and patients unrealistic expectations about new treatments. It is important to know the source of "spin" and so French researchers, led by Isabelle Boutron from the Universit? Paris Descartes, looked for the presence of "spin" in a sample of 70 press releases, and 41 associated news stories, of randomized controlled trials and investigated the source of the "spin."

The authors found that 33 (47%) of press releases contained "spin" and also identified "spin" in the conclusions of 28 (40%) study abstracts published in scientific journals. Furthermore, 21 (51%) of the associated news stories were reported with "spin," mainly the same type of '"spin"' as those identified in the press release and article abstract conclusions. Importantly, "spin" could lead readers to overestimate the benefits of the treatment.

The authors conclude: "Our results highlight a tendency for press releases and the associated media coverage of randomized controlled trials to place emphasis on the beneficial effects of experimental treatments. This tendency is probably related to the presence of "spin" in conclusions of the scientific article's abstract. "

They continue: "Our work highlights that this inappropriate reporting could bias readers' interpretation of research results."

The authors add: "Consequently, reviewers and editors of published articles have an important role to play in the dissemination of research findings and should be particularly aware of the need to ensure that the conclusions reported are an appropriate reflection of the trial findings and do not overinterpret or misinterpret the results."

CAIRO (AP) ? Newly activist Egypt is trying to convince Iran to drop its unquestioned support of Syria's embattled President Bashar Assad in order to end that country's bloody civil war in exchange for help in easing Tehran's regional isolation at a time of mounting pressure on it over its disputed nuclear program.

The offer is the centerpiece of a diplomatic push by Egypt's new Islamist president, who is hoping his "Islamic Quartet" ? grouping Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, all supporters of the Syrian rebellion, with Syria's top regional ally Iran ? can succeed where other initiatives have failed.

The grouping is the first major effort to involve Iran in resolving the crisis. But it may be a tough sell. Tehran's influence in the Middle East is strongly tied to its alliance with Assad and his fall would be a major blow. Moreover, the quartet members themselves have their own divisions. Sunni powerhouse Saudi Arabia, along with other Gulf Arab nations, has been staunchly opposed to any Iranian expansion and may resist ending Tehran's isolation.

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi made the offer when he met last month with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Tehran, officials close to the Egyptian presidency said. Morsi's visit to Iran, to attend a summit of the 120-nation Nonaligned Movement, was the first by an Egyptian president since the 1979 Islamic Revolution there, when diplomatic ties between the countries were cut.

Morsi offered a package of incentives for Tehran to end its support of Assad, the officials said.

Cairo would agree to restore full diplomatic ties, a significant diplomatic prize for Iran given that Egypt is the most populous Arab nation and a regional powerhouse. Morsi would also mediate to improve relations between Iran and conservative Gulf Arab nations that have long viewed Shiite Iran with suspicion and whose fears of the Persian nation have deepened because of Iran's disputed nuclear program.

Also, Morsi offered a "safe exit" for Assad, his family and members of his inner circle.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the terms of the offer. They did not give a timeframe for the offer or say what Ahmadinejad's response was.

Morsi's argument is that neither Assad nor the rebels fighting his regime appear to be capable of winning the civil war, creating a stalemate that could eventually break up the Arab nation with serious repercussions for the entire region, the officials said.

"Egypt is convinced that what is ahead in Syria under Assad will be much worse than anything the world has seen there so far," said one of the officials. "In view of this, Egypt believes that preventing more bloodshed will be a huge achievement."

Morsi, who took office less than three months ago as Egypt's first elected and civilian president, voiced his support for the rebels against Assad's "oppressive" regime in a speech at the summit in Tehran. The move angered the Iranians, but won accolades across much of the Arab world and in Washington. It also drove the point home to the Iranians that continuing to support Assad was untenable.

The Syrian conflict has defied diplomatic solutions. Cease-fires called for by the U.N. and Arab League have been still-born as Assad's regime pushed ahead with its military campaign to stamp out the rebels, who drove ahead with their effort to bring him down.

The Syrian conflict started in March last year with a wave of mostly peaceful protests calling on Assad to step down. The uprising has morphed into a ruinous civil war. Activists say at least 23,000 people have been killed so far and the U.N. refugee agency says more than a quarter of a million people have fled the country. The conflict also has a dangerous sectarian tone: Syria's Sunni majority make up the backbone of the rebellion, while the regime is dominated by minority Alawites, the Shiite offshoot to which Assad belongs.

Diplomats from the Quartet met in Cairo for the first time Monday, and Egypt said foreign ministers from the four nations would meet in the coming days.

One prominent Syrian anti-regime activist said Iran's participation in the group suggests it realizes that supporting Assad may not be workable in the long run.

"There is a consensus among the four that the Syrian conflict must end before the country disintegrates. If this happens, the fallout will touch everyone in the region," said Rami Abdul-Rahman, director of the British-based Observatory for Human Rights in Syria, an activist group that monitors violence and abuses in Syria.

"If left to its own devices, the war will continue for four or five more years," he said.

But abandoning Assad would be difficult. Iran provides Syria with substantial financial aid and weapons, both key for Assad to continue in his crackdown on rebels.

Syria is Iran's gateway to Lebanon, where the Shiite Hezbollah group is a longtime ally. Syria has been a firm friend of Iran for decades ? the only Arab nation to side with it against Saddam Hussein's Iraq during their ruinous war in the 1980s.

Still, Iran needs allies now more than at any time in recent years as its fears grow of a possible strike against its nuclear facilities by Israel or the United States while a host of U.N. sanctions begin to hurt its vital oil industry. The U.S. and its allies believe Iran's nuclear program is aimed at producing weapons, a claim Tehran denies.

Ties with Egypt could bring other benefits. Iranian Oil Minister Rostam Ghasemi said Monday that talks were taking place with Egypt for Iran to sell it oil. There was no official confirmation from Egypt that such talks were taking place, but Cairo has in recent months suffered from acute fuel shortages, blamed in part on its dwindling foreign currency reserves and lower credit ratings.

The new head of Egypt's diplomatic mission in Tehran, Khaled Emarah, may have been referring to those talks when he told a seminar in Cairo on Tuesday that Iran enjoyed a "surplus" in the oil sector and that it cooperated with many foreign nations in that field. In Washington, the U.S. State Department said it was aware of the media reports on the talks, but "will not speculate on hypothetical scenarios."

It said the U.S. will continue to implement sanctions "and increase pressure on the regime" while helping other countries to find energy alternatives, the State Department said.

But while Morsi can deliver on restoring Cairo's diplomatic relations with Iran, he may have a difficult time persuading Gulf leaders to improve their relations.

Iran has for decades occupied three Gulf islands that the United Arab Emirates claims as its own. Bahrain accuses Iran of inciting its Shiite majority against the ruling Sunni family. Saudi Arabia also sees an Iranian hand in the intermittent unrest in its mostly Shiite, oil-rich eastern region. Gulf states have been alarmed by Iran's growing influence in Shiite-majority Iraq.

"This will be a difficult goal for Morsi to achieve success," said Jamie Chandler, a political science professor at Hunter College in New York City. "The countries involved (in the quartet) have historically strained relations. But, if the conversation focuses on exile (for Assad), then Iran will be the most likely sanctuary."

(AP) ? The San Cristobal volcano spewed out a column of ash and gas 2? miles high Saturday, leading Nicaraguan authorities to evacuate about 3,000 people from nine communities around the country's tallest mountain.

Residents reported hearing three powerful explosions in the volcano as the cloud began billowing skyward and ash drifted over nearby villages.

"This activity could affect some 500 families totaling 3,000 people, so we decided to evacuate them," said Guillermo Gonzalez, executive director of the government's disaster agency.

Civil defense personnel said 300 soldiers were sent to evacuate people and care for them.

Javier Mejia, director of Nicaragua's geological institute, said monitoring instruments showed "strong activity" in the volcano. "We do not rule out anything, but call for calm," he said.

The 1,740-meter (5,740-foot) volcano sits 140 kilometers (87 miles) northwest of Managua, the capital. It has been active since 1520, Mejia said.

Nicaragua has been on alert since a strong earthquake shook neighboring Costa Rica on Wednesday and then a swarm of 17 minor tremors were recorded in the area around Lake Managua next to the capital the following day.

Candidates test their pipes, stamina on the road

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama's challenge in the art of connecting with an audience has always been to meet the high expectations. For challenger Mitt Romney it has been to exceed the low ones.

Their party conventions now over, both men are entering the high-speed flat track ahead of them with new vigor. The two have their own distinctive alchemy with their crowds ? Obama with his lectern-grabbing riffs and his "love-you-backs" and Romney with his jeans-clad informality in a ramrod frame.

They're not comparable. But each man, in his own way, heads into the final weeks of the campaign newly energized.

A look at their recent days on the trail.

____

OBAMA

For President Barack Obama, hitting his peak on the campaign trail is all about the feedback.

Give him a crowd that has lost its energy by wilting in the hot sun, and Obama will deliver a workmanlike speech that hits the notes and punches his topic points with enough gusto, but doesn't soar to match his reputation for rhetorical flight.

But give him an animated audience, preferably indoors and already whipped up to greet him, and the result is practically chemical ? a combination of self-confidence and crowd enthusiasm that seems to almost feed on itself. Twice last weekend, while touring Florida in his million-dollar campaign bus, Obama found that sweet spot.

In West Palm Beach on Sunday, the crowd waited inside a convention center as the Obama playlist dialed up Al Green's "Let's Stay Together," the love song that Obama made a YouTube sensation after he sang a snippet of it at a fundraiser earlier this year. Spontaneously, most in the West Palm crowd of 6,000 chimed in, creating a chorus that echoed inside the giant convention center.

In Kissimmee the day before, an eager audience let out a loud roar ahead of Obama's speech at the mere sight of an aide attaching the presidential seal to the front of his lectern.

He appeared without a tie, his top button undone and his sleeves rolled. Once started, Obama got an assist from a teleprompter but played off the crowd. They chanted "Four more years!" and he paused, nodding confidently, as he surveyed the scene. Then he worked them into a frenzy.

"I just want to remind everybody four years ago, I promised to end the war in Iraq ? I did," he said. The crowd cheered. "We said we'd wind down the war in Afghanistan ? and we are doing that." The noise rose.

"And a few days before 9/11, a new tower is rising above the New York skyline." It got louder. "We're coming back. Meanwhile, al-Qaida is on the path to defeat and Osama bin Laden is dead!"

The word "dead" was barely heard above the din.

He ended his speech shouting: "We will win this election. ... And you and I together will remind the world why the United States of America is the greatest nation on Earth!"

He spun on his heels and blew a vigorous kiss to the audience seated behind him. In West Palm the next day, he stepped away from the lectern and gave a waist-high double fist-pump as he shouted, "Let's go!"

If it's not a crowd, it's an off-schedule stop at a cafe or a restaurant, surprising local patrons as he makes small talk and poses for pictures. In Kissimmee Saturday, he was delighted to meet a 7-year-old boy who was born in Hawaii. Obama exchanged the traditional "shaka" hand wave with the boy and then mischievously asked, "Do you have a birth certificate?"

On Sunday, Obama stopped at a Fort Pierce pizza restaurant where he found himself embraced in a bear hug and lifted off the ground by the spirited proprietor, a Republican with a bodybuilder's physique and a charitable foundation. He's voting for Obama.

And so it goes. Visiting his Port St. Lucie campaign headquarters, he placed phone calls to other volunteers. Cell phone to his ear, he introduced himself to one, Barney Roberts of Jacksonville, and praised him for his military service and his help.

There was a pause.

"You don't believe me, do you?" he said.

___

ROMNEY

If Republican Mitt Romney didn't get much of a bounce out of his convention, it didn't keep him from getting one in his step.

The Republican presidential candidate, with a reputation for being wooden and reserved, returned to campaigning last weekend animated and buoyant.

It's a slight shift in Romney's body language and tone. The former businessman remains a model of good posture. And although he has traded coat and tie for jeans and rolled-up sleeves, Romney doesn't do loose.

But there was an intensity in Romney's on-stage demeanor during campaign events and in his approach to voters Friday and Saturday that projected confidence and energy in a race far from certain and far from over.

In Virginia Beach, Va., on Saturday, Romney closed a rally at the Military Aircraft Museum with sharp gestures emphasizing the points in his five-point economic plan.

And as he closed, his voice rose with the cheers of the audience until his shouts could barely be heard.

"Any challenge we face is a challenge we're going to overcome," he belted. "But we need a new president to get America on track. I expect to build a new future, a strong future, and take back America."

Romney doesn't use a lectern unless it's a formal speech. He's given to pacing on stage, in short steps, mic in hand. To make a point, he stops firmly, stands straight and delivers chopping motions with his hands.

Whether or not the convention provided momentum, Romney seems bent on creating his own.

If he succeeded in the last few days, he may have been helped by being well rested. He spent several days last week during the Democratic National Convention laying low at his vacation home in Wolfeboro, N.H., and prepping for next month's debates.

In Virginia's capital Saturday, Romney handed out free hot dogs, autographed t-shirts and posed for pictures with hundreds of supporters and NASCAR fans who turned out to see him, despite a steady rain at the Richmond International Speedway.

And although he lacks the common touch of past Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, Romney seems to be exuding more warmth. "I love America, and I love you, and I love the work you do," he told the audience in Virginia Beach.

Often caricatured as an out-of-touch elitist, Romney has hurt himself at times. In February, when asked about NASCAR during the Daytona 500 in Florida, he said he had friends who were team owners.

So on Saturday he mixed with race fans, autographed a racecar decorated with his campaign logo and met with Mike Helton, the president of NASCAR.

But when he was asked by a reporter which of the sport's drivers was his favorite, he dodged, saying, "There's lots of drivers I like, thank you."

Romney, 65, is clearly resilient. A mechanical problem on his campaign jet Saturday delayed his return from Virginia to Boston until 2 a.m. Sunday.

Later that day, Romney was up for church ? then on to his campaign headquarters for a five-hour debate prep session.

US military funded robotic 'cheetah' runs faster than Usain Bolt

Jamaican sprinter Bolt's current record of 27.8 miles per hour is the fastest a man has ever run, but the Pentagon-funded robot, dubbed Cheetah, managed to run at the speed of 28.3mph.

The Cheetah ? a quadrupedal machine built by Boston Dynamics and backed by Darpa, the US Defence Department's research division ? not only topped the Olympic 100m and 200m champion's record-setting time, it also beat its previous top speed of 18mph, set just six months ago.

However, the robot's developers qualified the achievement.

"To be fair, keep in mind that the Cheetah robot runs on a treadmill without wind drag and has an off-board power supply that it does not carry," Boston Dynamics said in a press release. "So Bolt is still the superior athlete."

"Our real goal is to create a robot that moves freely outdoors while it runs fast. We are building an outdoor version that we call Wildcat, that should be ready for testing early next year," Dr. Alfred Rizzi, the head of Cheetah programme, said in a statement.

According to the US Defence Department Cheetah is being developed for use on terrain where conventional wheels and tracks would struggle and will "contribute to emergency response, humanitarian assistance and other defence missions."
